3.1 Classroom Management & Collaborative Learning
Candidates model and facilitate effective classroom management and collaborative learning strategies to maximize teacher and student use of digital tools and resources.
Artifact: Smartboard Training
Reflection:
This Smartboard Training presentation was made during ITEC 7460. The purpose of this assignment was to teach a professional development course, which I chose to coordinate with my Capstone by doing a training for teachers who were still in the beginners phase of Smartboards and needed some extra resources.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of Standard 3.1 because I modeled and facilitated effective classroom management and collaborative learning strategies to maximize teacher and student use of digital tools and resources. My goal in this course was to provide teachers with Smartboard resources that they could use in their classrooms the next day. This presentation was put on the school drive and all sites were hyperlinked for easy access.
I enjoyed putting this training course together and was very excited about what I was going to present. Twelve teachers signed up to take my course who ranged from K-5 along with a counselor and special education teacher. I built in two practice times that were 10 minutes each where teachers could explore some of the sites or sign up for memberships, if needed. The course was put together in a manageable way and had a good flow, but just like any time you work with that many people and technology there were some glitches. The main problem we had was when everyone tried to sign up for a membership to Smart's Smart Exchange site. I am not sure if it was because so many people were trying to accomplish this at the same time or what, but it was taking a long time. A couple teachers did not finish making their accounts, and one of the teachers even said, “This is why I don’t use this stuff”. I had really wanted the teacher who made that comment to benefit from this curse because I knew if I could win her over it would be a huge accomplishment. Now, I wish I had followed up with her soon after the course to make sure she had gotten an account and had a couple of sites and ideas to use with her class.
To assess the professional development, I had teachers fill out a questionnaire throughout the session. Overall, the feedback from the was really good. The teachers seemed to leave excited about some of the tools they were going to try. There were a few people that asked that I offer this course again as a refresher, and some that wanted me to teach a follow-up intermediate course. I even had a few teachers who mentioned the sites they used with students in the weeks that followed.
