4.3 Diversity, Cultural Understanding & Global Awareness
Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness.
Artifact: Syllabus and Online Communication Guide
Reflection:
The Course Syllabus and Online Communication Guide were created for ITEC 7480. Their purpose was to communicate effectively with the students and parents in an online learning experience and provide information about the course and objectives, ways of communication, and expectations. These artifacts demonstrate mastery of Standard 4.3 because I modeled and facilitated the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness.
The course syllabus was used for this standard because online learning is on its way to becoming a global phenomenon. People all over the world, from many different cultures and backgrounds, are using computers and the internet to become connected. The learning that happens online is diverse and can provide authentic learning experiences that cannot happen in a traditional classroom setting. Given the diversity of students participating in online learning, it is important that clear expectations and guidelines are set for the Acceptable Use Policy, Students Rights to Privacy Statement, conduct and academic honesty policies, copyright, and online communication. Providing this type of information in a course syllabus makes sure that everyone involved in the class has a clear understanding of what is appropriate when using the internet, and is aware of consequences if there are violations of these rules and regulations. Also included was a statement of ADA compliance to make sure that parents and students know that all students have the right to learn and students with an IEP or 504 can submit this paperwork so that accommodations will be made within the course setup to facilitate their learning in a way that best suits their needs.
I wanted to make an Online Communication Guide that was user-friendly for both my students and parents. I spent a lot of time putting information in a newsletter format that detailed how to formulate emails and discussion, how to best communicate online, and the expectations of communication between students. I added this to the end of the syllabus rather than just having bulleted points within the syllabus containing this same information. I really like the guide I created, however the time that I tool to make it was not necessary when I looked at what was accepted in the sample syllabus provided in our ITEC 7480 course.
The impact this artifact has will be evident when students and parents are looking for information for the online course or have questions about it. The students will use the syllabus to look for course requirements, time lines, expectation and contact information. The parents will use the syllabus for course objectives, course requirements, guidelines, and general information that applies to them and their student. With all the information provided, it should be of benefit to everyone. Hopefully, impact of this syllabus will not be seen in the result of someone having to leave the class due to a violation of any of the rules and policies being violated. That would not be a good assessment to have to deal with, but it is there if needed.
