4.1 Digital Equity
Candidates model and promote strategies for achieving equitable access to digital tools and resources and technology-related best practices for all students and teachers.
Artifact: Mini Literature Review
Reflection:
The Mini Literature Review was written for ITEC 7470. The purpose of this assignment was to have us research a technology used at our school and find educational research and support so that we might become comfortable with reading, interpreting, and conducting research; and then be able to compile that information into a report or literature review. I chose to tie this assignment into my Capstone on the same topic of interactive whiteboards (i.e. Smartboard and Promethian) and their effective use in schools. This artifact demonstrates mastery of Standard 4.1 because I modeled and promoted strategies for achieving equitable access to digital tools and resources and technology-related best practices for all students and teachers within my literature review.
This was probably my most challenging assignment during my graduate experience. I can remember looking at all of those articles and then looking at the blank Word screen and not knowing where to begin. This went on for quite a while, and then I finally began to type. There were several great articles about the use of interactive whiteboards, some that were included in my review and some that were not. All of the articles had the same overall standing when it came to the incorporation of whiteboards into student learning: teachers have to be comfortable with the technology in order to use it effectively, students have to have access to the board to have engaged learning, and there needs to be follow-up training and support available to teachers for continued use.
This artifact was just created last semester, and I can honestly say that I was thrilled with the finished product, especially because of all the anxiety I had about it when I first started to write. The information I found was relevant and meaningful. I would have liked for there to have been more research about the effects of interactive whiteboard and student test scores, but it seems that this technology is still too new to assess that at this time. It will be of interest to research in the future. More information about how this research and my school observations directly deal with the integration of interactive whiteboards is available in my Capstone link.
