3.4 Adaptive and Assistive Technology
Candidates facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support individual student learning needs.
Artifact: Podcast
Reflection:
During ITEC 7430 we had the opportunity to learn about and explore “Twenty-one Things” or Web 2.0 tools. This artifact is a podcast that I made using Podomatic. The purpose of this assignment was to experiment with the tool and determine how we could best use this type of technology in our teaching.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of Standard 3.4 because I facilitated the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support individual student learning needs. As I mention in my podcast, this would be a wonderful tool to use for students to take home and listen to recorded books. It could also be a great resource for students who speak a second language to hear recorded texts and follow along with books sent home, or to practice content vocabulary terms. Parents could listen to recorded podcasts about what their child would be learning in math for the next quarter and some of the strategies teachers use to help when teaching specific skills. For parents who are unable to make it to Open House, a podcast presentation could inform them of what was said to help prepare them and their child for the upcoming school year.
I like how my first podcast turned out. I am still interested in making more podcasts and finding the best way to get them out to students and parents. I will need to continue to explore iTunes and mp3 player options and determine how I can make those easily available to my students. It may help to talk with the media specialist at my school and share some ideas about how we can start using some of this type of technology. This type of technology would definitely impact those students who struggle with reading and find listening to directions, stories, or assignments easier to understand and comprehend. Teaching students how to create thier own podcasts for presentations would provide another form of assessment.
