4.2 Safe, Healthy, Legal & Ethical Use
Candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies.
Artifact: Internet Safety
Reflection:
The internet safety presentation was created in ITEC 7410. The purpose of this assignment was to have us create an artifact that would provide information to others about Cyber Safety along with ethical use of the internet (i.e. copyright information). This artifact demonstrates mastery of Standard 4.2 because I modeled and facilitated the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies through an informative Power Point Slideshow that I turned in to a Jing presentation.
The presentation I made was a brief one that explained some different ways that parents can make sure that their children safely and properly use the internet. This information can also be used by teachers, as well as the copyright information provided. Looking at this artifact now, I think it is short and to the point, but more information could have been provided. Some of the pictures in my presentation include a couple of the kids of a fellow teacher at school. They followed my directions perfectly and seeing their pictures makes me smile. I shared this presentation with my teammates at school, but would have liked to have been given the opportunity to share it with the whole faculty. This may be something I ask my principal about for the upcoming school year as I believe it is an important topic that teachers do not always have in the forefront of their mind.
There have been a few examples within the last school year that have led to my desire to share this with the entire faculty. One instance was when our school counselor posted something on her blog about a program that our school is participating in. She found a picture online that went along with the program and posted it above the information she provided. A few weeks later she received a phone call from the owners of the picture she had posted saying she owed $4.99 for her display. This could have been worse since she had asked everyone to post the same information on their class blogs, too. Thankfully, she had only put the picture on her blog and had shared just the information with the rest of the staff. They were able to come to an agreement and she was nicely asked to remove the graphic with no charge. Another way in which I have immediately been concerned with internet use at our school was when I observed two different teachers on two different occasions pull up internet searches for images in front of the students on the Smartboard. Thankfully, nothing inappropriate came up and I was able to alert one teacher directly and quietly; but the outcome could have been very different. There is a lot of information about internet use and safety that I think students, teachers, and parents need to be aware of so they can practice good use.
